Queer Phenomenology: Orientations, Objects, Others, by Sara Ahmed

In this groundbreaking work, Sara Ahmed demonstrates how queer studies can put phenomenology to productive use. Focusing on the “orientation” aspect of “sexual orientation” and the “orient” in “orientalism,” Ahmed examines what it means for bodies to be situated in space and time. Bodies take shape as they move through the world directing themselves toward or away from objects and others. Being “orientated” means feeling at home, knowing where one stands, or having certain objects within reach. Orientations affect what is proximate to the body or what can be reached. A queer phenomenology, Ahmed contends, reveals how social relations are arranged spatially, how queerness disrupts and reorders these relations by not following the accepted paths, and how a politics of disorientation puts other objects within reach, those that might, at first glance, seem awry.

Ahmed proposes that a queer phenomenology might investigate not only how the concept of orientation is informed by phenomenology but also the orientation of phenomenology itself. Thus she reflects on the significance of the objects that appear—and those that do not—as signs of orientation in classic phenomenological texts such as Husserl’s Ideas. In developing a queer model of orientations, she combines readings of phenomenological texts—by Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and Fanon—with insights drawn from queer studies, feminist theory, critical race theory, Marxism, and psychoanalysis. Queer Phenomenology points queer theory in bold new directions.

Red Platoon: A True Story of American Valor, by Clinton Romesha

"A vitally important story that needs to be understood by the public, and I cannot imagine an account that does it better justice that Romesha's." —Sebastian Junger, journalist and author of The Perfect Storm

“Red Platoon is sure to become a classic of the genre.”—Hampton Sides, author of Ghost Soldiers and In the Kingdom of Ice

The only comprehensive, firsthand account of the fourteen hour firefight at the Battle of Keating by Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha, for readers of Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden and Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell.

"'It doesn't get better.' To us, that phrase nailed one of the essential truths, maybe even the essential truth, about being stuck at an outpost whose strategic and tactical vulnerabilities were so glaringly obvious to every soldier who had ever set foot in that place that the name itself—Keating—had become a kind of backhanded joke."

In 2009, Clinton Romesha of Red Platoon and the rest of the Black Knight Troop were preparing to shut down Command Outpost (COP) Keating, the most remote and inaccessible in a string of bases built by the U.S. military in Nuristan and Kunar in the hope of preventing Taliban insurgents from moving freely back and forth between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Three years after its construction, the army was finally ready to concede what the men on the ground had known immediately: it was simply too isolated and too dangerous to defend.

On October 3, 2009, after years of constant smaller attacks, the Taliban finally decided to throw everything they had at Keating. The ensuing 14-hour battle—and eventual victory—cost 8 men their lives.

Red Platoon is the riveting first-hand account of the Battle of Keating, told by Romesha, who spearheaded both the defense of the outpost and the counter-attack that drove the Taliban back beyond the wire, and received the Medal of Honor for his actions.

Review
“This ranks among the best combat narratives written in recent decades, revealing Romesha as a brave and skilled soldier as well as a gifted writer… Romesha remains humble and self-effacing throughout, in a contrast with many other first-person battle accounts, and his powerful, action-packed book is likely to stand as a classic of the genre.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“The book is riveting in its authentic detail…Romesha ably captures the daily dangers faced by these courageous American soldiers in Afghanistan.”—Kirkus Reviews

“[Romesha’s] account displays all the hallmarks of superlative wartime reporting: unflinching honesty; vivid, in-the-trenches description; and deeper reflections on the pathos of battle.” —Booklist

“[A] clear and expertly crafted account of an iconic fight during the Afghan War." —Library Journal

“[Red Platoon is] compelling and rich with detail into a world most of us will not experience. It will make readers really think about what soldiers go through for their country. Romesha is a great storyteller, knowing how to draw you in and leave you breathless.” —News and Sentinel

“I couldn’t recommend [this] book, RED PLATOON, any higher.” —Bill O'Reilly

“[A]n amazing read … a gripping account of men in desperate combat against an overwhelming enemy.” —The Tampa Bay Tribune

“[Romesha’s] experiences blaze the pages of his new memoir.” —Investor’s Business Daily

“The battle, from start to finish, is riveting. … I’m confident in saying that anyone who reads the full account — from the initial assault to the end of the attack — will be sucked into the action.” —Conservative Book Club

“RED PLATOON is an exceptional book … [a] meticulous and powerful telling of the 2009 battle at COP Keating in Afghanistan.” —Military.com

“It is a gripping read. It's something that will have you gasping as you hold your breath, rooting for Romesha and his comrades to prevail.  More important, it is something that rises to the level of literature in its portrayal of a battle most Americans probably know nothing about, as a part of a war our country still seems to be struggling to understand.” —Grand Forks Herald

“What sets 'Red Platoon' apart is Romesha’s thoroughness in recounting the frantic scramble of events.” —Herald and News

“It is so well written you're likely to feel you're in the middle of the action…Red Platoon will make you marvel at the courage of our young men in the face of a much larger force and the stupidity of the generals who put them there.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune

"This compellingly candid detail written by Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha tells of the grisly tumult of The Battle of Keating through the rawest of lenses—his own." —Parade

"I read the first half of Red Platoon in one sitting and that night had such intense combat dreams that I actually thought twice about picking the book up again. In addition to being a superb soldier, Romesha is an utterly irresistible writer. I'm completely overwhelmed by what he has done with this book. The assault on Camp Keating is a vitally important story that needs to be understood by the public, and I cannot imagine an account that does it better justice that Romesha's." —Sebastian Junger, journalist and author of The Perfect Storm

“Rendered hour by hour and sometimes second by second, here is battle narrative the way it's supposed to be written. Gritty, plangent, and unflinching, Red Platoon is sure to become a classic of the genre. Through his courageous and no doubt painful act of remembrance, Romesha has done his comrades, indeed all of us, a great service—leaving an epitaph that will live through the ages.”—Hampton Sides, author of Ghost Soldiers and In the Kingdom of Ice

“Red Platoon is riveting. Like many who were in either Iraq, Afghanistan, or both, I often read books about the wars reluctantly, because it is hard to capture the essence of the experience. In my view Red Platoon is a brilliant book. Had Clint Romesha depicted the soldiers at Keating as a collection of steely-eyed warriors, their feat would have been impressive. Because he captures the reality of a collection of personalities as diverse as America itself, their courage is truly inspiring.” – General Stanley McChrystal, U.S. Army, Retired

“Red Platoon celebrates the most crucial aspect of military operations: the team. Clinton Romesha and the men of Black Knight Troop faced harrowing conditions and a determined enemy during the Battle for COP Keating, and in the process discovered exactly who they are. This account is an important tribute to everyone who fought, and especially to the eight Americans who on that day made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.” – Mark Owen, author of No Easy Day and No Hero

“Red Platoon exemplifies the courage and resiliency our country was founded on. Clint is a true brother and a man that I look up to.” –Dakota Meyer, Medal of Honor Recipient and author of Into the Fire

"The men of Red Platoon and their actions at COP Keating deserve to be known. Clint Romesha's story takes hold from page one and makes you feel every inch of the battle, but it is the bond between soldiers that will stick with you. Red Platoon is on my list of the best books about the Afghan war." - Kevin Maurer, bestselling co-author of No Easy Day

"A visceral, heart-pounding account of men in close-quarter combat that is simply impossible to put down. Astonishingly intimate and beautifully written. A word of advice: don't start this book if you're planning on doing anything else for the next few hours." --Scott Anderson, author of Lawrence in Arabia

“Danger and death accompany combat. When unexpectedly surrounded and outnumbered by a Taliban enemy force, the stakes soared. Responses by the men of Keating were courageous. Led by Staff Sargent Clint Romesha, this band of brothers countered with supreme valor. This true story will make you proud of the American soldier. You will not want to put Red Platoon down.”—Colonel Bill Smullen, U.S. Army (Ret.)

Outstanding retelling of a terrible event
By Doc
Red Platoon, like all such books of the USA's recent conflicts, was a tough read. I expect the prior generation had much the same feeling regarding books about the Vietnam War. Perhaps I simply know too many men and women who've fought in these conflicts. Either way, the books is fantastic.

Red Platoon first introduces the NCOs and officers of the platoon. Most of them were veterans of either Iraq of Afghanistan already, though few had been assigned to the same unit prior to being sent to COP Keating. COP Keating is accurately described as a wretched folly, mainly because of its completely indefensible position. When the members of Red Platoon arrive, ostensibly to shut down the base, they immediately realize their predicament.

Constant harassing by the Taliban confirmed the platoon's worst fears. They were literally vulnerable from every angle, and being at the bottom of the valley allowed the insurgents to target them with almost no risk of harm themselves. Red Platoon, along with White and Blue Platoons, settled into a sort of rhythm. They came to regard the steady attacks as just part of the routine of COP Keating. However, when a determined, large Taliban force some 300-strong decided to assault the outpost directly, it came as a terrible surprise. The men of Keating were outnumbered nearly 5:1, and the enemy applied the lessons they'd learned from all their minor attacks to focus on the defensive positions. The sudden attack put even these professional soldiers on their heels. The immediate collapse of the allied Afghan forces aided the enemy greatly. Once the insurgents penetrated the base itself, the men of Keating had to fall back to the Alamo.

This is not an easy read in terms of the subject matter. The almost clinical recounting pulls no punches. There is proper scorn heaped on those who established the outpost in the first place, especially for the reasons noted by the author. The situation regarding support and supply for the remote outpost makes it clear that the men of Keating were all but on their own. The thought is rather chilling, and one can hardly imagine that feeling. The author relates the last moments of many of those who were killed, some by snipers, some by heavy firepower concentrated by large numbers of Taliban.

The book is a fast read, but it's one to slow down intentionally while reading to absorb the impact of each stage of the battle. As an account of the events that culminated in the author receiving the Medal of Honor, this is a wonderful book for military supporters and those with loved ones in the military.

Engrossing tale of men under fire
By Brian Baker
Clinton Romesha’s “Red Platoon” is a compelling and engrossing story of a true event: the attack on his platoon’s position at an outpost in Afghanistan, a fight that resulted in his own award of the Medal of Honor.

In the spirit of “Lone Survivor”, “Black Hawk Down” and “American Sniper”, this true story is masterfully written and compelling, keeping this reader fully engaged from first page to last.

Combat Outpost Keating was a disaster waiting to happen. It was poorly situated, being near the bottom of a valley dominated by looming escarpments, and very close to a small village that provided potential staging points for the opposition. It was at the end of a very difficult supply route, and in a position that didn’t allow for dependable air or artillery support. Some of the base security was provided by undependable indigenous personnel, primarily Afghani police forces.

When Black Knight Troop, the outfit which included Romesha’s Red Platoon, rotated in the decision had been made to dismantle the outpost and shut it down. But before this mission could be carried out the Taliban staged an attack in force. As the outpost was already partially dismantled, its defenders found themselves hampered not only by their position’s innate vulnerabilities, but also by virtue of the position no longer being at full capability, making their situation even more dire.

Their battle against seemingly insurmountable odds and overwhelming force will keep you turning the pages until the last chopper flies out.

I’d also like to extend my respect to Romesha, as well as those other Keating defenders mentioned in the book who performed so nobly and bravely. Outstanding.

An Excellent Book for All of Us!
By Judah Levi
This is not a political book - and that is a good thing. As a former Marine myself, I found this book to be the kind of story that could be told over and over again in different battles in different wars. It is about the people who serve, the ones who volunteer to protect our country and the horrors that they often have to endure when they do so.

Very few of the soldiers, sailors, airman and Marines ever face combat. Most people in the military go through their tour of duty never even firing a bullet at the enemy. Nonetheless, they face that possibility no matter what position you may be in. What most military people don't know is how they will react when they are hit hard by an enemy force. For the people in this book, they don't have to question that any longer. They know how they will respond - and did - with bravery and courage.

The best of America serves in the military and it amounts to about 1% of the country's population. It is that crucial 1% that allows all of us to go about our daily lives not having to endure what they endure. If you want an idea of what they endure, however, this is an excellent book to read and is well-written. No matter what you politics are, or even whether or not you supported the war in Afghanistan, this book will help you understand what it takes to defend our country and the scars it leaves that never go away.

I highly recommend this book for all Americans, especially civilians. It will open your eyes about how we are kept safe in the world.

The Ashram Diet: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times, by Niraj Chandra

This book has been thousands of years in the making.
The work began many, many centuries ago in the ashrams (spiritual retreats) of India. The yogis who lived in these ashrams developed the most perfect healthcare system in the world, designed for nurturing the mind, the body and the spirit. This knowledge was passed on from one generation to another, from teacher to disciple.
However, today, very few people outside the ashrams know how to prepare this food correctly. This book is designed to fill the gap in this knowledge, and explains the dietary principles behind the Ashram food. In many ways, these principles are well in advance of anything that the modern science of nutrition has to offer.

By Abraham Lobo
While there are many books on Indian cooking with various recipes, I found “The Ashram Diet” by Anila and Niraj Chandra to be totally different. It talks about the spiritual aspects of vegetarian food from the perspective of yogis. It is essential reading for anyone who practices yoga in any shape or form.

As I was reading this book, I focussed on just one recipe from the book – Sour Cereal- and it blew me away. It takes less than 20 minutes to prepare the dish, using the step by step instructions provided in the book. The results were excellent and the Sour Cereal is now one of my favourite breakfast dishes. I simply cannot wait to try out all the other recipes in this amazing book.

I look forward to more books/recipes of this kind from these authors. Good luck in all your new ventures.

The Oxford Book of Hebrew Short StoriesFrom Oxford University Press

It is unusual for a creative literature to be so much younger than its language, and the story of the development of Hebrew fiction is no less fascinating than the stories that embody it in this collection. The extraordinary revival of Hebrew as a spoken language at the turn of the twentieth century led to an explosion of literary activity that eventually drew a clear line of progression from the Jewish writers of Eastern Europe to their modern descendants in present-day Israel.
From a narrative whose concerns were predominantly historical and religious, Hebrew fiction has grown to embrace the modern world and to deal with subjects such as daily life in a small Jewish town, intellectual disillusionment, and the huge political changes with which Jewish writers have had to come to terms following the establishment of the State of Israel. War inevitably features often in these 33 stories which reflect, more than the literature of any other country, the social and political dilemmas of a multifarious culture. Alongside the grand themes are more intimate explorations of human relationships, and of individual triumph and anguish within the complexities of twentieth-century life.
This anthology demonstrates the astonishing richness and diversity of Hebrew short fiction by including not only established authors of the stature of Amos Oz, A. B. Yehoshua, Yehuda Amichai, and David Grossman, but also less well-known writers whose stories have not been published in translation before: Orly Castel-Bloom and Savyon Liebrecht among the younger women writers, Yitzhak Oren among the more experimental older generation. Glenda Abramson's informative introduction sets the scene for a powerful literary collection, the definitive anthology of a vibrant modern genre.

From Library Journal
This collection of Hebrew short stories contains the work of the great modern Hebrew prose writers (except for Agnon) in Europe and Israel. With consistently good translations and an excellent introduction and notes by editor Abramson (Jewish Learning & The Academy, Gordon & Breach, 1995), the work begins with Sefarim in the beginning of the 20th century and includes contemporary writers and lesser-known women and Sephardic authors. The sorrows and problems of the Jewish people in their exile and return are combined with works of personal anguish and happiness to reveal the great scope of Hebrew literature. The stories encompass different literary styles and techniques. For example, Dvora Baron's "Sunbeams" is a wonderful story of humanity and redemption set in the shtetl world of European Jewry. The writers of the Palmah generation are ably represented by Yizhar, Megged, and Shahar, among others. Shabtai's "The Visit" recounts beautifully the old days in Tel Aviv. A superb collection; highly recommended.?Gene Shaw, NYPL

From Booklist
This anthology of Hebrew short stories makes an ideal introduction to Israeli fiction. Arranged in rough chronological order, it charts the movement from a naturalistic tradition, heavy with political themes and social commitment, through the emergence of a New Wave--led by A. B. Yehoshua and Amos Oz--that stressed more individualistic themes and even questioned Zionist ideology. The later stories, such as David Grossman's evocative "Cherries in the Icebox," focus almost entirely on individual relationships, assuming a New Yorkerlike tone as men and women attempt to work out the ambiguous emotions that drive their actions. Editor Abramson provides capsule biographies of each author and a valuable introduction that traces the historical and political issues behind the development of Israeli literature. An excellent overview for international fiction collections. Bill Ott

Review
`the most important general anthology of Hebrew fiction in English translation ... the relatively high quality of this anthology, its scope, and its inclusion of an unprecedented number of the best recent Israeli writers, make it a landmark of Hebrew in translation' David Aberbach, Jewish Chronicle

A consitently superb collection!
By mcmonkey@ix.netcom.com
I am the translator of "Cinema," by Yitzhak Ben-Ner, which appears in this anthology. [A collection of powerful stories by Yithak Ben-Ner, RUSTIC SUNSET, also translated by yours truly, has just been published by Lynne Rienner Publishers and is available from Amazon. Try it: you'll become a Ben-Ner fan, I assure you!] The uniqueness of this new Oxford anthology is its consistently high quality. The works it choses are the best short fiction that modern Hebrew literature has to offer, and the translations are readable and idiomatic. the book covers the breadth of modern Hebrew literature from the 19th century into the 1990's. You'll find pivotal wirters such as Uri Nissan Gnessin, who wrote in stream of consciousness years before Joyce; Nobel Prize winner S.Y. Agnon; Amalia Kahana-Carmon, known as the Israeli Virginia Woolf, whose style has been often described as untranslatable -- our translators in this collection do a superb job, but I'm sure that the compulsive Ms. Carmon drove the the translators crazy!; Dahlia Ravikovitch; Aharon Megged and the late David Shahar (both of whose translated works have been especially celebrated in Europe but scandalously ignored by the American literary establishment); Ruth Almog; and more famliar names such as Amos Oz, A.B. Yehoshua, Aharon Appelfeld and David Grossman. By delving into this collection, the English reader will for the first time ever, be able to sample modern Hebrew literature from the same vantage point as that of educated Israelis, who view the writers in this collection as the building blocks of contemporary Israeli culture. Congratulations to the editor of this anothology and to Oxford Books. As we move toward a new century, this volume will surely become for the next two decades the principal survey text for Israeli short fiction in translation. Although an anthology by its nature is stronger in breadth than in depth, the reader of this collection will gain an in-depth view of the modern Israeli intellectual and cultural psyche. Stunning
By Eric Maroney
This expansive and inclusive collection of Hebrew short stories in English translation provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of the development of the short story in Hebrew from the early days of Mendele Mokher Sefarim's daring experiments in Hebrew fiction, right down to modern Israeli writers, writing Hebrew in a Jewish State. In between we can view the development not only of writing but of a diverse cultural milieu in the making. As Jews moved from Diaspora dwellers writing in a language recently "dead" but suddenly revived, to Jews living in Palestine in an emerging nation, to Israelis in a Jewish State, we can see the normalcy of life and fiction assert itself. From the rather self conscious attempts by early writers to use Biblical models and idioms to tell their stories, we read writers honing their craft according to European and the American models of literary expression, but with a unique local flair, expressing specifically Hebrew or Israeli concerns. And unlike other, older, collections of Hebrew short fiction, this one includes both "canonical" male figures like Sefarim, Brenner, Amichai, Oz, Yehoushua, but also female writers like Katzir and Liebrecht. All in all, this collection is superb.

More Stars, Less Sky, Please
By Atar Hadari
There are many ways of compiling an anthology, and many ways, perhaps, of considering what a collective voice is. Glenda Abramson, in the introduction to her "Oxford Book of Hebrew Short Stories", gives a fairly history-book account of the development of modern Hebrew letters, with the one note that "throughout the development of Hebrew literature writers have been nominated as representative because they exemplify a political consensus or a dominant ideology and many others have been omitted because they are perceived not to have done so." Her own candidate for greatness, Yitzhak Oren, failed to make this roll-call of social realism because while others were drawing the portrait of the new state he was indulging in "Kafka like fantasies". Off-hand, this does not seem such a unique bias. Kafka was hugged into the bossom of European literature in an era of absurdism and, let us never forget, as a dead saint. His meticulously prosaic depictions of the fantastic, the reports of an insurance man, were fine parables for the shook-up faiths of the post-concentration camp dissenters against ideology. Wherever else in the globe such fantasy has sold, such as South America, there was also a political bias toward resistance in the audience. Abramson's man Oren has suffered, like science fiction writers and other writers of "speculative" fiction in the U.S. and other lands of true believers, by not being taken seriously because he saw through the emperor's clothes.
The trouble with making one's only dissent to received opinion one "revived" writer and a handful of stories which "appear for the first time in an anthology in English translation...chosen primarily for their aesthetic quality, their narrative texture and colour" is that by accepting to an extent the burden of the cannon you become damned by failing to adequately represent it. If you will give an account of a literature consisting of its most famous practitioners - the "Usual Suspects" school of anthologizing - you cannot then simply omit a major figure with the note that to the anthologist's "great regret Agnon is not represented..because the Institute of Hebrew Literature was unable to negotiate terms for the reproduction of his story "The Garment". " This won't do - either construct an argument for certain stories or do not have an argument at all - do not presume to represent the firmament and then announce, by the by, that you could not quite get clearance to use Orion.
The translations, provided one assumes by that same institute, are not stunning. Two of the cannonical stories, by Hayim Hazaz and the father of the Hebrew story Mendele Mocher Seforim, are pieces the present author had to parse out word by word at school and for examinations, hence he has views on their potential in this language. Little things, like translating Mendele's town name which is a play on the word beggar as "Beggarsburgh" and all its citizens subsequently as "Beggarsburghers" - now, this is a solution to a problem which situates the language of the translation in neither England nor the U.S., nor, I suspect, any other English speaking province. If the aim of a translator is to reproduce the given text, brick by brick as it were, convincingly in another language, then the new edifice must be located somewhere in the language - if it has slang it must be the slang of a place and time, if it has references it must have references that make sense somehow within the history and geography of the host language. This invention, as an example, does the worst thing possible by attracting attention to itself as a "translation", thereby undermining the credibility of the narrative voice, and still not solving the problem - if the speaker were American it would be "Beggarsville", if English, perhaps, "Beggarsbrough" - a late twentieth century translator of Hebrew into English is probably aiming at an American market (where most of the world's English speaking Jews are) but, effectively, is writing a trans-Atlantic English, and these are the problems which translating into a language while (presumably in Israel) not living in it, can present.
Such matters aside, Abramson's anthology shines with less than ideological pieces such as Dvora Baron's "Sunbeams" - a heartrendingly simple account of the unremitting darkness of humanity, back in the shtetl, where an orphan girl is passed hand to hand by people who do not want to take responsibility for her eating mouth, winding up an outcast, surviving on scraps and odd jobs, with the only remnant warmth "a few words of endearment that came back to her from the mists of her early childhood" and allow her to pet a cow, just calved for the first time and torn from its off-spring, with whom she forms a bond that leads her to prosperity ad some standing in the community before she dies, alone but no longer unseen. In stories such as these humanity outgrows the confines of a nationality and the shtetl could be a place where something, like nothing, happens anywhere.

Editing sentences about strippers??!!
By MJ
I bought this to possibly use for a high school writing class for homeschoolers. In the first section, it asks students to correct this sentence: "We invited the strippers Katy Perry and Jay-Z." How is this type of material appropriate, and what was Princeton Review thinking when they published it?? Needless to say, it's on it's way back to Amazon for a refund.

I'm only halfway through this and have already found numerous errors. I question some of their rules and designations; they don't fit with what I have previously been taught, leaving me more confused than educated. I tried contacting the Princeton Review about the errors because I'm suspicious of these kinds of errors in a grammar book.

Shockingly incorrect and misleading
By Amazon Customer
An ESL student of mine has been working on this book independently and came to me with a whole host of questions, all of which result from mistakes, confusing explanations and incorrect rules that the book states. It is shocking. I have recommended that he throws it in the garbage where it belongs, and so should you.

Fantastic Retelling!
By DanaSquare
The Beast is a steampunk fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairytale and my favorite Disney movie. This is Lindsay Mead's debut novel and I have been eagerly awaiting its release. This is definitely a book that I will be pushing on people as much as possible. I was absorbed into this book from page one and read it very fast. I think this book is fantastic and an incredible start to a series.

I really liked the characterization of Gaston. I felt like he was more of a three dimensional in this book than I have ever seen in other stories. That being said I think the one thing that is holding me back from giving this book 5 stars is that the majority of the side characters were very flat and not very memorable. Even Belle and Aleksander could have had more depth to their characters.

I loved how action packed this story is right from the get go; Belle is kickass. The idea of hellhounds and Beauty and the Beast is just fantastic; it works so well. I haven't read much steampunk, but I loved this. It was just cool.

The fantasy aspects to this story were wonderful. I loved the mixture of mythology used in the story from Norse, to Greek, to the use of Catholicism and even it being alternative history. It was really interesting and I enjoyed reading about how all of this intertwined really well. I really like that it isn't a straight forward retelling as you read on through the story there is a lot of inspiration from Beauty and the Beast.

The romance was great. It really drew me even more into the story. I can't wait to see even more of Belle and Aleksander's relationship in The Beauty. It was really swoonworthy and I hope we still more growth to their relationship because it did happen very fast.

Fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses will really enjoy this book. This was a great fantasy read that really kicked me out of a reading slump. It is a fantastic debut and I can't wait to read Lindsay Mead's next book.

The Beast BOOK REVIEW!!!
By Dorky Girl
In the land of Glace cursed humans roam the lands in the form of wolf like creatures...

Belle doesn't really remember a time when the hunters weren't needed. Large beasts known as hellhounds threaten the people of Glace to the point where hunters are a necessity. Following in the footsteps of her mother and her father Henri who is the head of the hunters Belle has wanted nothing more than to be a hunter and she is good at it. Everything was the normal grind with the hunters until Belle's father Henri decides to go to an inventers fair in another town. Everything was planned out, Henri was to take his own band of hunters with him to help protect against the hellhounds during his travel. Everything should have gone smoothly until Henri's group was attacked and overrun with hellhounds killing all of Heri's group of hunters and making him flee to the nearest place of refuge.

Belle followed the tracks in the snow left by her father all the way up to the large gates of a castle. There shouldn't have been people this far out in Glace who weren't cursed but Belle was shocked to find the castle quite crowded with people and they didn't seem to happy to see Belle. The castle takes Belle in on the orders of the Prince allowing her to see her father who was being kept in the dungeon. Seeing that Henri was injured and sick Belle asked to switch places with him which was accepted leading to Henri's freedom. Belle was kept in the dungeon only for a short while to see if she was cursed then she was moved to her own room at the request of the Prince and was fussed over by the staff. Belle was getting comfortable in her new room, then the moon dreams started showing her a handsome Prince with the ability to enter dreams. In the moon dreams Belle quickly learns that the Prince's land was cursed by a woman which turned all of it's population into hellhounds, the only place that was spared was the castle but those within can't leave and the Prince is trapped as well. The Prince needs Belle's help to try and fix his lands as well as to free himself which she gives her service over willingly but Belle can't shake the feeling that she might be falling for this secretive Prince.

Is the secretive Prince's secrets to much for Belle or will their love for each other conquer all even the cursed....

Thoughts: I love Beauty and the Beast and this retelling was really good and a version that I had been waiting for. I have always pictured the story to be like this so I am very happy that someone has finally taken the picture and made it into something more! I really liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes fairy tales but is looking for that special something. My only problem with the book was there were some typing errors but being as this was the author's first novel I just looked over them since the story was still a good one.

Quotes:

" Death freed Them."

" If I never lived another free day in my life, this night would last me till my dying day."

" Your love will not be an easy one," Henri said, Though more to himself. A smile dance on her lips as she imagined it. "but it would be grand."

" Our love may be new, but one day it will be grand."

So happy for this book to finally come out after months ...
By Daniel Osborn
What can I not say about this book. So happy for this book to finally come out after months of anticipation. I am a huge fairy tale retelling person This is a retelling of the classic Beauty and The Beast. Beware this isn't your average Disney movie version. Hellhound as the beasts are called in this story has cursed through Glacé. Belle not your typical female was taught how to fight these creatures as an early child after her mother was killed. She was eventually made a hunter by the Catholic Church and made leader by her father of all the hunters being present at any new hunters ceremony. One of those hunters is of course named Gastone. This retelling has everything from the original fairy tale like Belles love of books and her fathers love for machinery which brings a great steampunk genre into the story as well. Of course when an attack by the hounds kills a person from her fathers scouting party and Belle left searching for him finds her way into the Beasts castle. Through books and moon dreams do we figure out the Beasts real identity. This book had me turning pages from the beginning and wanting more after I finished it. Does the curse of the hellhound end and everything becomes happily ever after I'll leave the ending for you to read. Thank you my friend for a wonderful adventure. Can't wait for book 2.

This book is excellent for nursing informatics
By christy k
This book is excellent for nursing informatics. The authors break the text down in to clear and reasonably understandable terms. I was nervous about the class that I took this with, but this book was a huge asset. It really helped with my understanding.
